What is the Evil Eye in Dandadan, and how does the series’ depiction differ from the real-life concept?
What Is Evil Eye?
The Evil Eye is a curse that humans have believed in since prehistory, and it refers to a malevolent look (such as glaring “daggers” at someone) directed at them. The motive behind such a curse is usually envy, which is why it is a very common concept to postpone giving people good news until it has passed in order to prevent envious people from casting the Evil Eye and thus “blocking your blessings,” as the cool kids would put it.
The relationship of the gaze or eyes with misfortune has been represented in numerous cultures in widely diverse ways; for example, the story of the Gorgon Medusa tells of a violent monster that takes the appearance of a lady with snakes for hair and whose eye contact causes petrifaction.
The eyes have also been considered “openings to the soul” all through history, possibly due in part to their operate as a main way in which people take in information from the world, as well as their role in the many facial expressions that human beings have in their collection that express vital information about how an individual is feeling or what they’re thinking.
Evil Eye in Dandadan
Evil Eye is a yokai connected to the Tsuchinoko sacrificial house. Jin Enjoji, often known as Jiji, Momo’s childhood playmate, accidentally lived in a house that was tied to a large earthworm monster to which a certain family had been secretly sacrificing people for over two centuries in order to keep the surrounding volcano inactive. The Evil Eye is a spirit that is connected to the house Jiji and his parents live in, which has become a sacrificial altar.
The Evil Eye was once a human boy who was captured by the Kito family to be sacrificed in a ritual meant to stop a volcanic eruption. He was locked up in the Tsuchinoko sacrificial house, where he suffered from hunger and loneliness. His only comfort was watching other kids play outside.
Sadly, the boy died from starvation, wishing he could join the children he saw. After his death, his spirit stayed in the house and saw the Kito family sacrifice more children again and again. Filled with anger, he became the yokai called the Evil Eye, vowing to destroy humanity out of hatred.
In Dandadan, the Evil Eye is an evil spirit that drives anyone who makes eye contact with it to commit suicide, making it similar to the Tsuchinoko. While it had shielded Jiji from the Tsuchinoko’s psychic waves, the Evil Eye eventually desired to possess Jiji, who possessed incredible spiritual energy and athleticism, and use his body to destroy humanity.
Momo and Okarun soon discover that Jiji may regain control of his body if hot water is thrown on him, whereas the Evil Eye takes over whenever a non-hot liquid comes into contact with him (similar to Ranma 1/2).
After seeing its memories, Jiji felt pity for it and its strong desire to play with other children; yet, due to its long search for vengeance, its ideas of play and violence had become inextricably linked. Okarun pledges to entertain its bloodthirst once a week if it agrees to fight only him and give Jiji power over his own body.
