Animation series have gone next level over the past years, with reaching new heights the production cost is going higher too. According to recent reports, the total cost of producing and promoting both seasons of Arcane has reached $250 million making it the most expensive animation of all time!
Riot Games’ League of Legends adaptation on Netflix has claimed the title of the most expensive animated series ever, with a reported budget of $250 million (Variety).
The animation was initially considered as a five-season project but the series is now set to wrap up after two seasons of nine episodes each.
The $250 million figure covers both production and promotion costs for the entire 18-episode run of “Arcane”. The first nine episodes reportedly cost around $80 million to produce.
Season 2 production cost for the second set of nine episodes is said to be “approaching” the $100 million mark. Furthermore, for the promotion part Riot Games reportedly spent an additional $60 million promoting the first season alone.
Marc Merrill, co-founder and chief product officer of Riot, stated, “We’re more than comfortable with the spend it took to deliver a show that was worthy of our players’ time”.
The second season of Arcane premieres on Netflix on November 9, 2024. Episodes will release in three parts: Act 1 (episodes 1–3) on November 9, Act 2 (episodes 4–6) on November 16, and Act 3 (episodes 7–9) on November 23.
