Netflix has secured another major anime series that fans should look forward to next summer, as the first trailer for The Summer Hikaru Died has been released.
Mokumokuren’s The Summer Hikaru Died has been a relatively quiet hit since its debut with Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace in 2021, and with the upcoming release of its official TV anime adaptation, fans will see why it’s been such a creepy and kooky hit until now.
The Summer Hikaru Died anime is set to debut in Japan during the Summer 2025 anime schedule in July.
It has been licensed for international release with Netflix, with no concrete release date. A teaser trailer and first poster can be seen for a first look.
What is The Summer Hikaru Died and What it Follows?
The Summer Hikaru Died, originally written by Mokumokuren for Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace, is a frightening story about Yoshiki and Hikaru, two best friends (and possibly more). When Hikaru goes gone one day, he returns with a strange appearance.
Yoshiki realizes that this isn’t the Hikaru he’s known before. However, rather than avoiding this new Hikaru, Yoshiki is pulled to him and wishes to be by Hikaru’s side regardless of what strange events may be occurring with him. All the meantime, an even greater threat lurks in the shadows.
The Summer Hikaru Died will be directed by Ryohei Takeshita (Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night) and produced by Cygames Pictures. Takeshita will also handle the new series’ scripts, with Yuichi Takahashi acting as characters designer and principal animation director.
The anime’s main characters, Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indou, will be played by Chiaki Kobayashi and Shuichiro Umeda. With the new anime set to premiere in the summer of next year, we can expect more definite information in the months to follow.
