Makoto Shinkai’s movie Suzume has gained a lot of attention, not just for its beautiful animation but also for the creative decisions behind its story & ongoing things about its producer.
The film’s lead characters, 17-year-old Suzume and 22-year-old Souta, sparked discussions among fans about the age gap. However, the real focus is on Shinkai’s efforts to move away from typical romance in the story.
The film’s producer, Koichiro Ito, who also worked on Your Name and Weathering With You, wanted a storyline with a younger girl and an older male character to attract a wider audience.
But Shinkai wanted to explore a different idea, focusing on a sisterhood-like relationship instead of romance. Despite his efforts, the producers insisted that romance was necessary for the film’s success.
To balance the producer’s demands and his own vision, Shinkai made a bold choice. He turned Souta, the male lead, into a chair for a big part of the movie.
In an interview, Shinkai said, “I wanted to focus on a sisterhood story, but my producer said, ‘You may be tired of romance, but your audience loves it.’ So, to avoid making it too romantic, I made her main interest a chair.”
This unusual decision allowed Suzume to stand out from Shinkai’s earlier works. It created a unique story that moved away from the typical romantic tropes seen in many anime films.
