Akio Iyoku, the executive producer of the Dragon Ball franchise, recently shared an interesting detail about the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
He revealed that the movie was created to give Piccolo a bigger role in the story and introduce his powerful new transformation.
During the “All Night Nippon – Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary Special” radio show on January 1, 2025, Iyoku explained that, following the events of the Dragon Ball Super TV series and movies like Dragon Ball Super: Broly, characters were becoming increasingly powerful, leaving Piccolo’s role uncertain.
Seeking to make Piccolo relevant again, Iyoku consulted with the late Akira Toriyama, leading to the development of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
The film centers on Piccolo and Gohan as they confront the resurgence of the Red Ribbon Army. Notably, Piccolo attains a new transformation known as “Orange Piccolo” through the use of Earth’s Dragon Balls.
This narrative choice intentionally sidelines series stars Goku and Vegeta, allowing Piccolo and Gohan to take the spotlight.
This strategic focus on Piccolo has been well-received by fans, appreciating the character’s renewed prominence and development within the Dragon Ball universe.
What are your thoughts on this? I guess Piccolo really needed a push in the franchise. Share this article with your fellow anime friends and don’t forget to follow us on Google news & Instagram for more quick updates.
