Keep reading to know more about Giyu’s backstory and the reason behind his clothing style.
I don’t really have to introduce you all to Giyu Tomioka but let’s just do it, a quick introduction.
Giyu Tomioka is one of the most popular Hashiras in Demon Slayer. He had displayed a great deal of skill while taking down some of the most formidable demons. He is a reserved character and doesn’t engage in a conversation unless it’s essential.
So that was some little info about Giyu, now it’s time to talk about his outfit and why it was designed in that manner. There’s a lot behind the design of his outfit and everything is spoiler.
Giyu wears a haori that split down the middle into two different patterns. The right one a solid red, and the left one geometrically patterned with squares of green, orange, and yellow.
Backstory of Giyu Tomioka and history behind his outfit (Haori) design
To understand Giyu Tomioka Haori (outfit) design, we have to look at his backstory. He grew up with his elder sister, Tsutako. They were living normally but one day they got chased by a demon, who was trying to eat them. Tsutako loved her little brother (Giyu) and she gave up her life protecting him from the demon.
Tomioka Giyu tried warning the Villagers but no one belived him and titled him as mentally ill. Giyu ran away and came across Sakonji Urokodaki.
Giyu explained Sakonji everything and started training under him to become Demon Slayer. Naturally, he befriended one of Urokodaki’s students, Sabito.
Unfortunately, during their Final Selection, Sabito died by the hands of “Hand Demon” saving Giyu Tomioka.
Giyu lost two of the closest people and blaming himself to this day because they both died saving him.
Giyu’s sister (Tsutako) wore a dark red Kimono while Sabito wore a green Kimono which had hexagonal geometric shapes of yellow and dark green. If you look at Tomioka Giyu’s outfit, one half is green while other half is geometric shapes of yellow and dark green. Giyu designed his Haori in that way to honor the brave souls of his sister and friend.
